Liverpool star Cody Gakpo was recently seen handing out meals to children in Togo, his father’s native country.
In a TikTok video, the 24-year-old forward is shown serving bowls of food to a group of young kids, just days after representing the Netherlands in the Nations League, where his team finished fourth following a 3-2 loss to Italy in the third-place play-off.
As reported by ESPN, Gakpo’s visit to Togo was driven by a desire to give back to the community, and he is reportedly considering establishing a charitable initiative there. Gakpo has strong ties to his Togolese heritage, with family members still living in the West African country.
Despite being approached by Togo’s football association four years ago to represent them internationally, Gakpo, who has been part of the Dutch football system since the U18 level, chose to continue with the Netherlands.
Since 2022, he has been an important player for the Dutch team, with his three goals during the Qatar World Cup group stages playing a key role in his move to the Premier League.
Gakpo has around two weeks remaining in his off-season before he reports back to Liverpool for pre-season training, officially kicking off the Reds’ 2023-24 campaign.
