GLORY: Curtis Jones scores a goal for England in the 90th minute with a high-performance display

Roy Keane was quick to commend England’s performance in their 3-0 victory over Greece on Thursday—but his praise came with a caveat.

England avenged their 2-1 loss to Greece at Wembley last month and climbed to the top of their Nations League group, thanks to goals from Ollie Watkins, debutant Curtis Jones, and an own goal by Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Lee Carsley’s squad, which faced pre-game discussions about missing players, had extra reason to celebrate the strong performance they delivered.

Jude Bellingham, who has struggled for form this season with Real Madrid, played with a renewed “swagger,” according to Keane, putting in a much-improved performance.

“He’s got that quality, swagger. The performance was mature. He’s an outstanding player. They earned their bit of luck,” Keane told ITV after the game.

“They tried to showcase their skill without putting in the work at Wembley. You’ve got to earn the right to play,” he added. Keane’s co-pundit, Ian Wright, singled out another standout, praising Curtis Jones’s determination and adaptability in his debut.

“Curtis Jones was so determined, eager to get into the box. He’s got that ability to adjust and do just that. Brilliant tonight,” Wright commented on the Liverpool star.

After giving England its due, Keane couldn’t resist adding a dig at the Three Lions.

“You’ve got an Irishman leading the group and a German waiting in the wings!” he quipped.

Current interim coach Lee Carsley, who represented Ireland 40 times from 1997 to 2008, will step aside after the upcoming game against Ireland.

Although Thomas Tuchel wasn’t at the game—a decision that has faced some criticism—he’ll take over from Carsley in early 2025. The team he inherits is now in prime position to finish their Nations League campaign as group winners, provided they can beat Ireland in their final match.
