Saturday’s UEFA Nations League match between the Netherlands and Hungary in Amsterdam was paused for over 10 minutes due to a medical emergency involving a Hungarian coach.
Referee Jesus Gil Manzano stopped the game after Hungary’s coach, Adam Szalai, collapsed on the sidelines. Some witnesses reported he might have experienced a seizure.
Medical staff quickly set up a tent around Szalai to provide treatment.
Players and staff from both teams appeared visibly distressed, with Liverpool midfielder and Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai seen in tears. However, Szoboszlai and his teammates ultimately decided to continue the game.
Shortly after play resumed, the Netherlands took a 1-0 lead as former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst scored a penalty. Meanwhile, the Hungarian FA released a statement on social media, confirming Szalai’s stable and conscious condition. They noted that he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Amsterdam for further examination.
Szalai, 36, is a former striker with 26 goals in 86 appearances for Hungary from 2009 to 2022.
