BIG WIN for Netherlands: Gakpo seizes the opportunity with a penalty kick, leaving Szoboszlai disappointed

The Netherlands will book their place in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals with a win over Hungary.

The visitors had the lead after just three minutes but Schafer sent his rebound over the bar, and five minutes later the match was interrupted when a Hungarian assistant coach fell ill.

When the match resumed, the Netherlands had the first bright attack and were immediately awarded a penalty for Nikitscher’s handball, leading to Weghorst’s opener. Hungary responded with Sallai’s header straight at goalkeeper Verbruggen.

The two sides continued to trade blows until Malen won the second penalty for the Netherlands in the 12th minute of stoppage time after a foul by Nagy, which Gakpo took and finished accurately into the top corner.

The Netherlands did not hold back at the start of the second half but Weghorst unfortunately missed with a curling shot that hit the crossbar.

Hungary almost pulled one back when Szoboszlai’s shot went just wide of the post from Sallai’s cross, but in the 64th minute, Dumfries was on hand to meet Gakpo’s cross with a volley into the far corner to make it 3-0.

Dumfries’ late cross found Koopmeiners to head in for 4-0, and Koopmeiners almost added a fifth for the Netherlands but was denied by the crossbar.
