Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez was seen celebrating in front of former Everton defender Yerry Mina after Uruguay’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Colombia in a South American World Cup qualifier.
Colombia took a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to a clever free-kick by Juan Fernando Quintero. However, the match turned in favor of Uruguay with an own goal from former Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez and a strike by Rodrigo Aguirre, making it 2-1 to the home side before the hour mark.
The drama intensified in added time. Andres Gomez equalized for Colombia in the 96th minute, but Uruguay quickly responded with a dramatic winner in the 101st minute when Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte scored from 15 yards out.
Ugarte’s goal set off wild celebrations on the field and in the stands. Nunez, in particular, celebrated exuberantly in front of Mina. The tension continued after the final whistle, with Nunez appearing to argue with his Liverpool teammate Luis Diaz, who had played the full match for Colombia. However, after their brief exchange, the two shared a hug.
Mina, who played for Everton from 2018 to 2023, joined Fiorentina on a free transfer before moving to Cagliari in June.
Nunez played the full 90 minutes for Uruguay, coming off a strong performance in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa the previous weekend. While he has started only four times in the Premier League under Reds manager Arne Slot this season, Nunez has earned praise for his determination.
