QUALIFYING SPOT: Dominik Szoboszlai’s 90th-minute penalty helps Hungary secure a point to enter the playoff match

In the match between Hungary vs Germany in the 6th round of Group A3 Nations League 2024/25, the home team was lucky to keep 1 point thanks to Szoboszlai’s penalty goal in the 90+9 minute. Thus, Hungary will participate in the relegation play-off.

Germany has already qualified for the quarter-finals of the Nations League 2024/25. Therefore, coach Nagelsmann made some personnel adjustments when not launching the optimal lineup in the away match against Hungary.

Despite not using their strongest lineup and playing away, Germany was still the better team with superior ball control. However, this team could not score despite creating many opportunities in the first half. Therefore, the two teams drew 1-1 in the first 45 minutes.

The second half saw a more open game and Germany finally got a goal. Felix Nmecha opened the scoring in the 76th minute after a messy play in the box. His close-range finish gave Germany a temporary 1-0 lead.

Not wanting to lose at home, Hungary put all their efforts into attacking. The drama came in the 90+6 minute when Hungary was awarded a penalty after VAR intervention. In a controversial move in the penalty area, Robin Koch let the ball touch his hand, giving Hungary a valuable opportunity at the penalty spot.

Captain Dominik Szoboszlai accurately executed the decisive penalty kick in the 90+9 minute to help Hungary retain 1 point.
