“We are almost in December and I have not received any offers to continue at the club. Maybe I am leaving more than staying,” Mohamed Salah said earlier this week about his future at Liverpool. His contract, along with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, all expire on June 30, 2025. So far, none of them have committed to the club.
The “earthquake”, as described by the British media, came after Salah scored twice in a 3-2 comeback win over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
The result helped Liverpool continue to break away at the top of the table. Arne Slot’s team is eight points ahead of defending champions Man City. “I’ve been at the club for many years. There’s no club like this,” Salah stressed. “Ultimately, the decision about my future is not in my hands,” he concluded.
Salah’s statements are justified. The 32-year-old star has turned down many offers from Saudi Arabia, where he was promised an income far exceeding his current figure.
He is the club’s all-time leading scorer. Salah was the driving force behind the team’s 2019 Champions League and the English football championship after a 3-decade wait.
However, Salah’s approach is not the best. Because, his reaction took place in a very important week for Liverpool. First, the English port city team has a battle with Real Madrid in the Champions League (just ended this morning). Besides, this weekend Liverpool welcomes Man City in round 13 of the Premier League. This is a turning point match, considered to decide the ambition to compete for the title.
“I hope to reach an agreement but I have to say, I am very disappointed with Salah. Liverpool have to face Real Madrid and Man City. That is the main story at the moment. Now, the most important thing for Liverpool is not the future of Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold.
The most important thing is that the club wins the Premier League,” former player Jamie Carragher criticized.
Carragher was quite heavy: “Winning the Premier League is more important than any of these players. If they keep posting comments or agents keep posting confusing sentences on social media, that is selfish. It is thinking about themselves, not about the team.”
Salah is leading the scoring list in all competitions for Liverpool, with 12 goals. In the Premier League, he has scored 10 goals, second only to Erling Haaland (12 goals). However, Man City are currently in serious trouble after 5 consecutive defeats. They are like a wounded beast and are at the edge of the wall. That means they will do everything to rise up so that Liverpool does not widen the gap to 11 points. Therefore, Salah’s thoughts at this time are not at the right time.
