Mohamed Salah provided a brilliant assist for Cody Gakpo, who put Liverpool ahead with a well-taken goal during a dominant first half against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday evening. Salah delivered a perfectly weighted, low cross from the right wing, finding Gakpo at the far post.
Gakpo, who started ahead of Darwin Núñez, took advantage of the pass by sliding the ball into the net for his sixth goal in seven games. City captain Kyle Walker seemed unaware of Gakpo’s positioning.
Salah later spoke about the goal, saying, “We train well to always be [set up so] if you have the ball, the [player on the] other side has to be at the second post.”
He continued, “I told Cody before the game, every time I have the ball and there’s a chance for me to play the ball to you, I will play it for sure. I’ve passed him a few balls this season, and also to Lucho [Luis Diaz]. We work on that pass in training, so to execute it in a match is fantastic.”
This assist not only highlighted Salah’s exceptional vision and accuracy but also marked a significant achievement—his 100th assist for Liverpool, solidifying his place in the club’s history. On top of that, Sunday’s performance saw him reach another milestone: it was the 36th time in his Premier League career that he has both scored and assisted in the same match, equaling Wayne Rooney’s record for the most such instances.
Under Arne Slot’s guidance, Salah is continuing to perform at an elite level, further enhancing his legacy as one of the Premier League’s all-time greats.
