One new rule could ruin the MLB.Commissioner Rob Manfred dropped this nugget on John Ourand’s pod a few weeks ago, about potential new rule changes:“One of them – there was a little buzz around it at an owners’ meeting – was the idea of a Golden At-Bat.”So what’s a Golden At-Bat?It’s an idea where a team could choose one at-bat every game to send their best hitter to the plate, even if it wasn’t his turn to hit.For example:With the bases loaded in the 9th, the Yankees could use their “Golden At-Bat” to send up Aaron Judge.Or if it’s the 3rd inning and the Dodgers have a chance to blow the game open, they could send up Shohei Ohtani. That’s the basic idea. There are also some variations that are being tossed around.Like only being able to use the “GAB” in the 7th inning or later.Or only being able to use it if you’re tied or losing in the 9th.It’s still very early in the discussion stage, but there’s a possibility we could see this new rule tested out in the MLB All-Star Game at some point. Some think the Golden At-Bat will cause more viral moments, like Mike Trout facing Shohei Ohtani in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.Others think it’ll ruin the game as we know it, and make baseball too star-centered instead of team-centered.Regardless, the idea is out there and it’s being talked about. So don’t be surprised to see the “GAB” tested out at some point in the future.
