Virgil van Dijk has called on Liverpool to remain focused despite their position as Premier League leaders, while admitting the team’s performance in their 3-3 draw with Newcastle on Wednesday was “poor in all aspects.”
The Reds currently enjoy a seven-point advantage at the top of the table as they head into Saturday’s pivotal Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park—a ground where they endured a damaging defeat last season that all but ended their title hopes.
Looking back on the match at St. James’ Park, Van Dijk acknowledged the team’s failure to execute the basics. “The first half was poor from us as a unit, both offensively and defensively,” he said. “In the second half, we showed what we can do—winning battles, competing in 50-50s, improving on the ball, and finding the net. But unfortunately, we couldn’t secure the win.”
Van Dijk highlighted the lack of intensity as a key issue. “Challenges,” he stated. “Newcastle always bring extra energy at home. Their fans thrive on their effort in winning duels, and we didn’t rise to that level. We were careless in possession and let the momentum slip too easily.”
Despite the second-half resurgence, the captain emphasized the importance of consistency as the team prepares for Everton.
He also dismissed speculation about his future, with his contract set to expire next summer, responding with a firm “Nothing” when questioned about potential renewal talks.
