Arne Slot will serve a one-match touchline ban following an outburst during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Fulham at Anfield.
The Dutch manager received his third yellow card of the season after reacting in frustration to Curtis Jones being booked for a mistimed challenge on Alex Iwobi, with the home fans expressing their displeasure at the referee’s decision.
The match was marked by heightened tensions, especially after Liverpool’s Andy Robertson was shown a red card for a foul on Harry Wilson, denying Fulham a clear goal-scoring opportunity just 17 minutes in.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Liverpool managed to fight back twice, with goals from Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota neutralizing strikes by Andreas Pereira and Rodrigo Muniz.
“There were a few moments where I could have received a yellow card,” Slot admitted. “It’s an emotional game, and being a man down is frustrating. However, I’m proud of our performance despite the setbacks. Judging decisions in real-time, like the referee, is challenging. We have to accept VAR’s calls, as such decisions are crucial. The draw wasn’t down to officiating.”
While Slot is generally seen as more composed than his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, he had also been booked during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Chelsea and the 2-2 draw with Arsenal in October.
Liverpool’s lead over Chelsea has narrowed to five points, though Chelsea could reduce the gap further with a win over Brentford on Sunday.
However, Chelsea will have played an extra game compared to Liverpool. Arsenal, meanwhile, failed to capitalize on the opportunity to gain ground, settling for a goalless draw against Everton despite dominating at the Emirates.
The match also marked the return of Diogo Jota, who made his first appearance since October after recovering from injury. Jota made an immediate impact, scoring just seven minutes after coming on. Earlier in the game, Pereira had given Fulham the lead with a well-taken volley, but Gakpo equalized with a superb header from a Mohamed Salah cross.
